February 20-21, 2016 – Ebenezer, Ga. – Saturday morning the Southern Campaigns Revolutionary War Roundtable will meet at the New Ebenezer Retreat Center. This Round Table will be followed Saturday afternoon by a Corps of Discovery tour. Saturday – we will meet in the Retreats dining hall from 10:00 am until about noon, break for a “Dutch Treat” lunch, then tour the amazing Revolutionary War earthworks at New Ebenezer, Ga. – a fortified British camp from 1779 to 1782 – with project archaeologists Rita and Dan Elliott. This will be followed by a car-pooled tour of the Briar Creek battlefield with project archaeologist Dan Battle. Sunday – 9:00 am – meet at the New Ebenezer Retreat Center for a car-pooled tour following the 18th c. Savannah to Augusta Road north, the route of British Lt. Col. Archibald Campbell’s 1779 invasion of the Georgia backcountry with interpretative stops. Both events are free and the public is invited, the Saturday luncheon at the Retreat will be $10 per person, and we will pass the hat to cover all other expenses. Accommodations: Some of the SCAR and GARPA team will be staying Friday and Saturday nights in very limited number of private bedroom/bathrooms are available in a six-suite private cottage at the New Ebenezer Retreat Center reserved by Southern Campaigns Revolutionary War Roundtable. Overnight lodging with linens is $48 per person, double occupancy, per night without meals or $63 single occupancy without meals. Overflow rooms on the Retreat’s campus may be reserved in a dorm cottage or in hotels in Rincon or Pooler, Ga. General James Edward Oglethorpe and the 114 colonists had left England in November 1732 and had sailed for two months to reach South Carolina (arriving in January 1733) and they then founded the British colony of Georgia in February of 1733. ... See more

On January 13, 1733, James Oglethorpe and 130 colonists arrived at Charleston South Carolina. Oglethorpe sailed for 88 days, Arriving at South Carolina on the ship Ann in late 1732, and settled near the present site of Savannah, Georgia on February 12, 1733. He negotiated with the Yamacraw tribe for land and established (Oglethorpe became great friends with Chief Tomochichi, who was the chief of the Yamacraw) a series of defensive forts, most notably Fort Frederica, of which substantial remains can still be visited. He then returned to England and arranged to have slavery banned in Georgia. Oglethorpe and his fellow trustees were granted a royal charter for the Province of Georgia between the Savannah and Altamaha rivers on June 9, 1732. Georgia was a key contested area, lying in between the two colonies. It was Oglethorpe’s idea that British debtors should be released from prison and sent to Georgia. Although it is often repeated that this would theoretically rid Britain of its so-called undesirable elements, in fact it was Britain’s “worthy poor” whom Oglethorpe wanted in Georgia. Ultimately, few debtors ended up in Georgia, the colonists included many Scots whose pioneering skills greatly assisted the colony, and many of Georgia’s new settlers consisted of poor English tradesmen and artisans and religious refugees from Switzerland, France and Germany, as well as a number of Jewish refugees. The colony’s charter provided for acceptance of all religions except Roman Catholicism. The ban on Roman Catholic settlers was based on the colony’s proximity to the hostile settlements in Spanish Florida. ... See more
