“Footprints on the Sands of Time III” Historical Tour of the Sylvania City Cemetery – Thursday, November 5th, 2015.
Docent led tours begin at 4:00 pm, each group visiting with eight actors portraying local citizens interred in the cemetery. Times are assigned at ticket purchase at the Soda Shop Gallery in Sylvania, GA or call 912-564-7200. Tickets $10 each.

Captain James Green Garnett was born January 18, 1822. His family had arrived from England in 1680, and made their way to Georgia where his great-grandfather, Lt. Thomas Garnett obtained a land grant in Georgia in 1772. Captain James Green Garnett grew up to be a steamboat captain, spending much of his life on the Savannah River, owning and operating four steamboats during the mid to late 1800's. During the Civil War he ran supplies and troops up and down the Savannah River on his boat, the Swan. They were ambushed many times, but managed to escape until the last year of the war when they were caught in Savannah, and the Swan was burned by the Union Army. Captain Green Garnett and his crew escaped to Hardeeville, SC, but later acquired a smaller boat, the Laura, making runs up and down the Savannah for the remainder of the war. Passenger steamboats returned to the Savannah River after the Civil War and continued until the late 1800’s. Steamboats traveling between Augusta and Savannah offered their passengers state rooms, meals, and entertainment on the 36 hour trip between cities. One boat, the Ethel, even had a steam calliope, and the music of the calliope could be heard from one boat landing to the next!
